Join us for 2-3 days on horseback in the Canadian Rockies as we search for the majestic bull elk during the rut. September thru October is a very special time in the mountains of southern Alberta with the leaves changing colors to red, yellow, and orange of ''Indian Summer'' as well as the distinct high pitch whistle of bull elk during the rut.

Join us as we stalk these magnificent creatures while they round up cows to build their harem and defend their herd from other aggressive bulls. Listen as 2 or more bulls challenge each other to their dominance for rights to breed the cows. Take pictures of this incredible phenomena as we try to talk one of these beautiful animals in close or while we stalk a herd of elk with a vocal bull.

You will spend 2-3 days by horseback up in the high country where you will camp in canvas wall tents with wood buring stoves and cots along with other comforts to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. Located just off the Continental Divide you will be situated in prime elk country with lots of high slopes and grassy meadows to have an oppurtunity to film elk during their most active time of the year. The presence of Indian Summer just adds to the magnificence of this special time of year.

Your elk bugling safari will take place in Kananaskis Country which is a provincal park located 1.5 hours just south of Banff National Park and west of Calgary 1.5 hours drive. Nestled up to the Continental Divide this beautiful wilderness area is home to many varieties of big game including the North American Wapati. These wild elk spend their summers here on high mountain slopes giving birth to their calves and in preparation for the long winters cold. As summer comes to an end the evenings grow cooler and the first frost of the fall hits the valley floor. Leaves change to their beautiful pastel colors scattered through the heavy spruce and pine timber, this is the time of year when the forests come alive with sounds of music. These 900 lb. ghosts of the forest become restless in there quest for domanince. Small spruce and pine trees are stripped of there lower branches as bull elk polish their antlers for the fights to come. Bulls start traveling across the hill sides searching for the scent of cows ready for breeding and gathering as they go. This is the only time of year these magnificent creatures become vocal!

Our goal is to put you into areas where you will be able to experience the thrill of being close to bulls echoing their bulgles through the valleys and to also try and draw an excited bull close to us or get close to a herd of elk for you to have the oppurtunity for an incredible photo shoot! Southern Alberta Fly Fishing Outfitters would like to invite you to add this special adventure to your fishing trip with us or if you just want to experience bugling bull elk during the months of September or October just let us know we would be more than happy to arrange dates for you. During these 2 months there are specific dates in which the elk are in the prime of the rut so book early to ensure you are here during that time!
